KITCHENER SCHOOL BUS DRIVER HONORED FOR SAVING A CHOKING STUDENT
Last summer, Sarah Brake, a School Bus Driver at Stock Transportation’s Kitchener location, was operating a morning run to Primrose Elementary School. A 9-year-old girl approached Brake on the bus and tugged at her sleeve. The girl was in distress. After a few quick questions, Brake realized the girl was choking. She removed the student from the bus and administered the Heimlich maneuver three times, successfully dislodging the food and allowing the girl to breathe. Brake calmed the girl, along with the bus-full of worried students.
Brake’s quick thinking recently earned her the Driving Out Harm Individual Award for Safety from National Express Corporation (NEC), a leader in student transportation. Stock Transportation is part of NEC, and Brake is one of 11 individuals and teams among NEC’s 220 locations across United States and Canada being recognized for demonstrating the company’s values in action.
“We are proud to acknowledge employees and teams for their hard work and dedication to living our company’s values in the areas of Safety, Customers, People and Community,” said David A. Duke, CEO of National Express Corporation. “Our Values reflect our priorities and we gladly celebrate those who exemplify them.”
Penny Phibbs, General Manager for Stock Transportation’s Kitchener & Orangeville locations, had this to say: “Sarah had only been with us for five weeks when she was faced with a situation that most of us will never experience or want to experience. We make sure that all our drivers have first aid training before they drive a school bus because you never when they may be faced with a life threatening situation. We are very proud of Sarah and her actions that day. We know that when our drivers are faced with situations of this nature they are equipped with the knowledge and training to make the correct decisions.”
