Stock drivers rank among the best-trained commercial vehicle drivers on the road. Trainees undergo an initial nine-day comprehensive training program. In the first year of employment, our drivers will have extensive training in technical skills, bus environment management, student discipline and customer service. Drivers are exposed to real-life driving situations and will participate in classroom, practical and homework sessions. Trainer evaluation and final road and written tests determine a driver's qualification.
In addition to this basic training, candidates who will transport wheelchair passengers, undergo specialty wheelchair training including a comprehensive emergency evacuation procedure.
Stock drivers participate in ongoing training and continuous improvement above and beyond the basic government requirements.
Our ongoing training programs include:
- School Bus Driver Improvement Course
- Defensive Driving Refresher Course
- Individualized Collision Review and Re-Training
- Student Behaviour Management
- Emergency Evacuation
- Pre-Trip Inspections
- Mirror Visibility Checks
- CPR and First Aid
- WHMIS-Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System
All drivers are reviewed annually in our Driver Review and Assistance Program (DRAP). The driver or monitor is accompanied on a run by the DRAP reviewer who checks for proper driving and habit, student management habits and ensures that risk areas are identified before safety is compromised.
Drivers who have had a collision deemed to be preventable are required to undergo refresher training and a driving review. This ensures that poor driving habits can be identified and corrected before another accident occurs.
